Cheap air travel? So who isn't looking for a bargain these days?
You can safely assume that the biggest single expense you'll have to fork out for before leaving on your backpacking trip around the world will be your plane ticket — especially if it's a long-haul international one.
And realistically, that probably won't change.
But if your itinerary is reasonably flexible and you're willing to put in a bit of time and effort, there are lots of unbelievably cheap airfares out there for anyone who can find them.
You just need to know how and where to look!
Okay, let's cut right to the chase.
One of the best ways to save a bundle on your travels is to buy a round the world ticket (often written simply as RTW ticket).
Round the world flights do pretty much exactly what they say on the box. They fly you around the world (usually from Point A back to Point A) with various stops en route.
With just a little bit of determination and planning you can get some really incredible round the world ticket fares.
Once when I was living in London, I decided to go on holiday to French Polynesia. This was right in the middle of the high season though, so cheap air travel to anywhere in the South Pacific didn't look too likely.
But I did a bit of hunting around and eventually managed to nab an amazing deal on a round the world ticket with stopovers in Toronto, Los Angeles, Papeete (Tahiti), Auckland, Sydney and Hong Kong.
And all for hundreds of dollars less than just a return flight to Tahiti!
If prices like these sound like your kind of cheap air travel, a round the world flight might be your thing.
Go to the RTW page for the whole lowdown on round the world tickets.
Even in the high season you can find discounts on round the world tickets, cheap international flights, cheap one way flights, charter flights, last minute airline tickets and bargain flights on low cost airlines.
You might even get lucky and find a dirt cheap flight that fits exactly into your around the world travel plans.
But I wouldn't bank on it.
To get the absolute cheapest airfares you need to be prepared to work your itinerary around what's on offer.
